The Results are In

The weekend was a stinker, very hot! Fortunately a rather stiff breeze stirred the air most of the time and make it more tolerable.

The children all put in a great effort and everyone earned medals for various places. Medal are awarded down to 8th place. Points are also alloted to 8th place with the person having the most points at the end of the two day meet becoming the winner of that age group. Plaques are awarded down to 6th place on the podium.

The medal ceremony had to be held outside this year and it was in the full sun. So you’ll understand the very red faces appearing in some of these photo’s.

Cody swam well in a huge field of 9-10 year old boys. This would have to be the biggest age group and has some very stiff competition in it. Having not even qualified to swim at the A Regional Championships last year Cody had the goal to qualify and swim there this year.

He has improved beyond anyones dreams and has actually qualified to swim various races at the Nationals as well as those he competed in this weekend.

So for him to place in a couple of races and come away with medals was - in his own words…”I feel really happy to have won some medals”. We are of course ecstatic that he got some as well to reward him for training so hard over the last couple of months. He also got a silver medal for second place in the freestyle relay with 3 other children from our team.

Hot and happy Cody has two more medals to go with this lot!

Chloe has also improved beyond anyones imagination this year. She suddenly got a little competitive at the beginning of the season when she realized she was within sight of the top girls as far as times go, where never having shown that drive in the past.

She had “fun” with it before, more or less just enjoying the swim meets and training. Since then her times have continually improved all season and it showed in her lane/heat placings being in the top 8 for this big meet.

She amassed a bunch of medals yesterday including a gold. Having only just scrapped into the A’s last year at the last moment with one qualifying swim it was truly a delight to see her up on the podium in 5th place.

Chloe told me she thought she didn’t swim as well as she hoped, and therefore that she did not place. Her surprise and happiness at placing and winning a plaque brought on the tears, which you can’t quite see in this photo. She is holding them back and trying to smile at the same time.

The placings for 6th through to 3rd were all within a point or two of each other so it was a very close competition for those spots on the podium. The girl who won the age group is also from our team and trains with Chloe. We were very happy that she won it!

Happy tears and 5th Place!

Jarred did very well in this equivalent of a State Final meet. He got the burn to win while competing in the A’s last year. His training level has increased no end (as has Chloe’s who has trained with him) and it has shown in a remarkable improvement in his times.

He placed 3rd overall yesterday which has fired him up so he is raring and ready for the Nationals in two weeks time. The boy that beat him into first place this weekend came first at the A’s and at the Nationals last year(Jarred did not place at the Nationals). This has really spurred Jarred on to training and swimming extra hard and competing so well.

There is a lot of friendly rivalry between the two boys. The same boy also broke two national swimming records this weekend and said that the competition from Jarred has pushed him hard too.

Well done!

Shania was in the same place as Chloe last year. She just scrapped into the A’s, won a couple of medals but didn’t have enough points for the podium or a place.

This year she came first!

shania1stas2008.jpg

She couldn’t quite believe it!

Talk about giggle pot. She was sitting on the mat with all the other children when they announced it, and even though we had told her we thought she had placed, I don’t think she really took it in. Then when they announced first place as being her she just turned and look at us…like…

“Me, really me????”

Up she climbed into first place on that podium and you could not wipe the grin of her face for anything! She continued to grin for the next hour, hugging her big first place plaque to her chest all the way home.

Now it is back to the pool and into the last two weeks of training before the National Swimming Championships. We fly up there on Wednesday the 28th. The competition is on Thursday the 29th and Friday the 30th. Then we catch a flight home that night.

I’ll try and add some more photo’s from the weekend here soon.

On Your Mark

Get Ready!

Go!

We are all set. The first of our two major swim meets for the year is tomorrow. The food is cooked and waiting. The bags and towels are packed. Timer is in. Sunscreen, hats and fluid replacement drinks are ready.

The house is buzzing as all the preparations have gone on. The is a nervous excitement in the air as strategy is discussed between the children often as they go about their everyday routines.

Today we went to the pool so they could do some stretch swimming and prep for tomorrow.

Now we just have to wait.

Results will be forthcoming after Friday night!

Happy Mothers Day

Praying you all have a blessed Mothers Day and that you get to spend time with those you love.

Mine all forgot…even Wayne - till someone reminded him at work.

Spending my day with my cherished family is the best Mothers day gift anyone can have and I got to do just that. It was kind of funny that I was treasuring it when they didn’t even have a clue.

:)

We did some school work in the morning. Then headed of to the pool. They had a training session with their coach this morning. The older two did a two hour session while the others did just over an hour.

I held off cooking lunch till 1 pm when Wayne got home from work. We had a nice meal of home BBQ’d chicken and a salad from veggies grown in our own garden. Then some down time spent resting and reading. Not to mention the washing and some baking.

Wayne must have told the children some time after lunch because they all started whispering and sneaking around. Eventually they all surrounded me with sheepish grins, hugs and their just ‘right there and then’ made cards.

I love handmade cards from the children so what could be more prefect.

Late afternoon it was back to the pool for another 2 hours for the older two. We ordered Thai food from our favourite Thai lady on the compound and had a lovely time just chilling out and being together.

All in all a perfect mothers day

Bahrain International Swim Meet

Today was a hot windy day but a good time was had by all. It was nice to swim against some other teams and competition.

The results were good. No outstanding personal bests though there was a little improvement on a couple. There were also a couple of dud swims…but everyone has days like that. The pool was a little unusual at the ends and so took so adjusting to on the turns.

The children came home with a couple of gold, a couple of silver and some bronze medals. Plus ribbons for a couple of minor placings.

Now it is back to the training!

Just Because

Today Shania and I baked Cupcakes or Fairy cakes as we call them back home.

She has made the basic ones before but she has wanted to tackle the decorated ones for a while now. With no swim meet today for a change ( it is tomorrow) it was a great time to try it out. Plus we needed some snacks to take for when they finished their swim meet.

They don’t usually eat anything like this during a meet, but afterwards they like to catch up on some calories. And while I usually give them something like wholemeal banana cake or at least resembling a more healthy choice occasionally a treat like a cupcake or donut is a nice change.

So this was her first go at piping icing.

Shania Piping Cup Cake Icing

She did a great job on all these.

CupCakes on a Shabby Pink Plate

While we were creating, Wayne and Chloe did some much needed refrigerator and pantry replenishing and came home with these for me.

May Rose Flower Bouquet in Hesian

How sweet they are!

I haven’t had flowers since my birthday last year so it was such a lovely treat.

Max Update

On of the best things we did in the last year has been getting our dog.

Thought you might like an updated photo. This was taken in the car before he had a grooming session. He looks a lot neater now.

Max in May

Still - Who could resist such a cute face?

Swimming, Swimming, Swimming

Seems like this has become our point of concentration lately. Of course we do a lot more than just swimming. However everything in our day is geared around focusing on “the swimming”.

Swimming Focus

For instance…cooking, and eating, cooking eating and washing towels. Did I say cooking and eating. Man can these kids consume a huge amount of food.

Given that the older two are doing 17-20 hours a week in the pool covering vast distances and the younger two are doing about 9 hours a week it is not so surprising that they are eating so much. The amount of calories they burn off has to be replaced.

Then every Thursday they have a meet where they swim between 4 and 5 races each, competing at the best level they can.

So between getting over being sick, traveling to and from being at the various pools we train in (our and the team pool at another compound) schooling, cooking cleaning and washing, and a whole normal range of everyday life I just have not had the chance to update the site.

It won’t change much over the next couple of weeks either.

Dates:

9th May - Bahrain International Swim Meet

15th  & 16th May - A Regional Championships - all 4 children have qualified for it this year.

29th & 30th May - The National Swimming Championships. - all 4 are swimming at this too.

The children have all done a lot of hard work over the last few months and it is so nice to see it pay of for them by  qualifying to swim at these levels.

Been A While

Sick house, sick Mum…and lots of rest!

Be back when we can!

Max

Finally got some more photo’s of Max to share.

Max was born on my Mum’s birthday…20th of November last year. The munchkins thought this was very special. They were trying to work out a Nannaish type name for him but being a boy it was a bit hard. So Wayne’s original choice of Max stuck

He is training very well though we still have a few “accidents”. He holds on all night though so that is very nice. We take him out before bed and then around 5-5.30 when we get up. He seems to handle this quite well.

Surprisingly he is not all mad…though some of the photo’s will say otherwise. :)

He is soft and gentle, understands the word no, and just loves to sit at someones feet all day. The other thing we have been surprised at is how little he eats. After all our big dogs it is a nice change.
